Western Pomeranian Initiative Paludiculture

The widely-spread agricultural use of peatland by drainage and amelioration causes many problems as release of greenhouse gases and nutrients, loss of biodiversity, soil degradation and increasing difficulties of land-use. However paludiculture („palus“ - latin: marsh) is an appropriate farming type for wet peatland. The collaborative research project VIP – Western Pomeranian Initiative Paludiculture will advance the concept of cultivating rewetted peatlands and realise it exemplarily in Western Pomerania with scientific guidance. A sub-project with contribution of LUP GmbH pursues the extrapolation of the peatland gas budget from the topical to the landscape level. Therefor the topical macrochore mapping will be advanced using satellite images and be adapted to the requirements of the sites characteristics. Methodological basis for the image analysis will be a vegetation classification of rewetted peatland.
