Detection of regions of fresh and cold air production as well as fresh and cold air flow in the City of Potsdam
Satellite data of the ASTER sensor, that features several thermal channels, were used to analyze the temperature distribution (warm - cold) of the urban area Potsdam. The imagery captured in the early mornings of February 16th 2002 (winter), May 9th 2002 (summer) and October 15th 2005 (autumn - spring) were selected and georeferenced. Unfortunately no night time images were available.
Based on the satellite data the potential regions of fresh air production were classified through unsupervised ISODATA-clustering and overlayed with the biotope type mapping 2004. Hence it was possible to identify biotopes that serve as fresh air production spots or balance areas in Potsdam (mainly trees/shrubs, wetlands, water). The regions of cold air production were located likewise (field, waste land).
Moreover flow ways and barriers of fresh and cold air were detected through a comparative GIS-analysis based on a terrain model and a surface model with vegetation and buildings. In areas with less relief the flow ways were corrected subsequently in consideration of the prevailing wind direction.
